New year, new music
Alright. It’s not from a lack of music that I haven’t posted yet this year - rather on the contrary. I’ve already experienced much greatness on the music front and I can’t wait to see what the rest of the year’s got to offer.
A little over a week ago I got the opportunity to see Lars Fiil Quartet again. And if anything, they’ve become more experienced, confident and melodic. A lovely live show and as always, I believe they have great things lined up for them if they maintain this high standard.
And in one and the same week I was blessed with two equally amazing releases. First off, Portico Quartet released their third album, Portico Quartet. It’s definitely different from the previous two and their sound has evolved in a more electronic direction. But it still sounds like them, like Portico Quartet, like nothing else on the scene today.
Album number two was, well, album number two from my favourite jazzers in Caution! Art Kills! named Current Affairs. What I’m constantly drawn to by them is their unique ability to make jazz sound like anything but jazz (but then again, some might argue that that’s what makes jazz jazz…). The music is calm, dramatic, filmic and improvisatory, all at the same time.
So it’s been a year of jazz for me so far. But am also looking forward to certain new albums from the Pacific Northwest region (cough-Portland-cough). It’s gonna be a great spring.
