Top albums of 2011
Another post in Danish, and another one I did for the work blog. Best albums of 2011.
10. Explosions in the Sky: Take care, take care, take care Over tre år nåede der at gå, før EITS atter lod høre fra sig. Take care, take care, take care er et 46 minutter langt og seks numre kort album, der endnu en gang demonstrerer bandets exceptionelle evne til at afdække hele følelsesspektret med deres mur...

Top songs of 2011
A rare post in Danish. This is one I did for the blog at work. I’m a little too lazy to translate right now - but perhaps you’ll get a little of it (or feel free to use Google Translate, I take no responsibility for the outcome, though), the titles nonetheless. Hopefully I’ll find time to do the album list in both English and Danish. Soon to follow… Click on the titles to...

And now for something completely different. I only recently discovered, that the two hyper creative and busy brothers David and Steven Dewaele, aka Soulwax, 2manydjs, The Flying Dewaele Brothers etc., in the midst of their ever busy touring schedule found the time to develop and release an app this summer. And it’s not just any odd app. It’s the best music app I’ve seen since...
Bill McHenry live on NPR
I had the pleasure of meeting Bill McHenry in May when he was in Denmark as an “Artist in Residence” for 2 months. Among others, he joined forces with Søren Bebe’s trio and played at the Music library. One of those lovely and rare shows, where you felt in the presence of masters.
Now he’s long back in the US, and NPR/WBGO has just put a live set online from a recent...

Oh love
I recently discovered the amazingness of Canadian folk musician Dan Mangan. His new album, Oh Fortune, is probably one of the best albums I’ve come across so far this year. It’s vibrant, soulful, catchy and completely its own in an indieworld dominated by loads of rather plain acts.
You can stream the entire album via Exclaim.ca - but I of course urge you to buy it physically. You...

Vitalic - My Friend Dario
I can’t believe I haven’t posted this one before. One of my all time favourite music videos! Took me 2-3 views before I noticed the air guitarists don’t play actual guitars.

Lone Wolf Love
Yesterday, my colleague and I spent the entire Saturday shift (4 hours) playing Lone Wolf’s The Devil and I. Partly due to laziness, but mostly because it’s such a darn good album. It is the perfect balance between familiarity, catchiness and drama. I hereby add it to my list of favourite albums of 2010 (albeit retrospectively).

The great cover songs theme #6
Meant to post this for ages. Brilliant cover.
Poker Face
Original: Lady GaGa
Cover: Cartman
This is stunning! Wye Oak provided the first great album of the year, Civilian, and this solo project seem every bit as interesting.

The great cover songs theme #5
The sign of a great cover song is when the covering artist takes the original song and applies his own sound to it. And The Bluetones do just that. Another reason to attend their farewell tour this September!

Jonathan Jeremiah
I know I ramble a lot on a lot of great artists but THIS is really, really exciting! Some two years after hearing him for the first time on Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide show, Jonathan Jeremiah’s finally released his debut album, Solitary Man.
I can’t quite put a finger on what makes this guy so astonishing - and why I listened to the album 3 times in row today. Maybe it’s...
On Thursday Odense’s lost sons in plök returned to their hometown for a couple of hours to play at the Music Library. I think it’s safe to assume that this was the loudest library concert ever! They cranked up the volume to the max and delivered one hell of a show.
Starting next week they’re going on a European tour which will bring them to Holland, Belgium, France and Germany....
Here, I’ve got something for you. Courtesy of City Slang. It’s friggin’ awesome!

The great cover songs theme #4
Been a while since I’ve stumbled upon a nice cover song. But it just happened.
Heartless
Original: Kanye West
Cover: William Fitzsimmons
Say what you want, I think the lyrics come through much stronger in William’s version.
Super very much looking forward to the new O’Death album, Outside, due out on June 3rd.
This is the first single, Bugs. Which may well be the best song I’ve ever heard them play. They’ve toned the madness down a bit - and by doing so have found an amazing sound which is mature but without a question still very O’Death-y.
Read the band’s moving come-back story and...
Efterklang at Volksbühne on Sunday was spectacular. I’ve rarely seen them so energetic and happy on stage - which clearly rubbed off on all of us in the audience. They played for a good 1,5 hours, improvised a lot of instrumental passages and came out for 2 encores. They more than deserve the break they’re taking after this tour.
Caution! Art Kills!
I guess it’s no longer a secret that I’m fan of jazz. In particular that produced by the fresh-faced, young people in Lars Fiil Quartet and Caution! Art Kills!
Tonight the latter played a fantastic concert at the Music Library (booked by yours truly). I often hear great music but I practically never lose myself into the music. I did that tonight. Completely. Their music is...

Adele
I can’t say I was ever a fan of Adele. On the other hand, I never disliked her either. Maybe just “meh”. But I think this Tiny Desk Concert might turn me round. She’s got a lovely, crisp, soulful voice which really jumps out at you in this video. It’s almost an acapella performance. Great.

Pflum pt. II
The vinyl was indeed as spectacular as I’d hoped for! Welcome back, bass. How I’ve missed you.

First music of 2011
2011 was packed with great releases: Delphic, Laura Marling, Zola Jesus, Susanne Sundfør, Beach House, Menomena etc.
Now I’m turning a new leaf and have just bought the first record of the year (although, honestly, it was released half a year ago).

The bass seriously makes me weak in the knees! Can’t wait to put it on the stereo.

Future Prophecies
Doing a little archeological research in my iTunes library. Finding some amazing things. Like this, Dreadlock. Must’ve had it on constant repeat a few years ago, but somehow I got out of the d’n’b scene again, sadly. But it still kills!

Beach House - 10 Mile Stereo
I wouldn’t have said this just a month ago, but after having seen Beach House live again a few weeks ago, they’ll definitely make it into my top 5 of 2010. Teen Dream is unbelievably amazing!
I'm Jim Morrison, I'm Dead
Song of the day on NPR. I never cease to be amazed by Mogwai. This is so much more than a wall of sound - it is a million emotions more than could ever be expressed in words.
Come On
This is rad. I had the honour of hosting a concert with the extremely talented jazz comets from Lars Fiil Quartet on the annual Spil Dansk Dagen (a day dedicated to Danish music) on October 28th. This is a new, fresh approach on how jazz sounds in the year 2010.

I got the Zola Jesus album this weekend. I’ve listened to it two times in a row tonight. That’s rare enough in itself. But her voice…! Music like this doesn’t come by very often. Am quite blown away, to say the least.

Well I hope this volcano stops soon. It has been now on full blast for almost a week. Canceling flights for most of Europe & so on. That is weird. And this is the second volcano to erupt in one month or so here? And there might be another one that is even bigger that follows this one when this…
Fingers crossed!
